Thanks for Fantastic Community Support for Blood Drives
Maria Parham Medical Center has been a partner with the American Red Cross for many years and has held regular blood drives ever since. Response from the community has always been good, but his past year it has been exceptional! We still have one more drive scheduled for the 2011 calendar year (in December), but, for the five blood drives that we have already sponsored in 2011, we have exceeded our goal for units of blood collected, sometimes by as much as 30%! With unemployment so high and the economy in a general downturn, you would think that citizens’ minds would only be on how they could manage until the next payday. Surprisingly enough, at least part of them have been focused on how they could help others, by giving what the American Red Cross calls ‘the gift of life’. Maybe that is the reason they give blood—they aren’t financially able to help others in need, but they can give something that doesn’t ‘cost’ anything—just an hour or less of their time. Maybe they feel that, even though times are tough for them economically, they are still in good health and they realize that not everyone can say that-- like people who have been in accidents, or who have special medical conditions or those who need serious surgeries. Maybe that is the reason they give blood. Maybe they have a family member or close friend who has received a blood donation. Maybe that is the reason they give blood.
Whatever the reason, thank you Henderson, Vance County and the surrounding areas for making this a banner year with blood collections through the American Red Cross and Maria Parham Medical Center. Let’s keep up the fantastic work!
