MPMC's Cancer Care Partner
Among Nation's Elite Cancer Programs
DURHAM, N.C. – The most prestigious annual ranking of the nation’s hospitals has rated Maria Parham Medical Center’s cancer care partner, Duke University Medical Center, as the #11 cancer program - one spot higher than last year.
This year’s U.S. News & World Report survey also ranked Duke as the top cancer program in the Southeast.
Maria Parham Medical Center (MPMC) and Duke have worked together for over 20 years as part of a comprehensive effort to ensure the best care possible for patients in Vance, Warren, Granville and Franklin counties, along with those from the Southside Virginia area. The collaboration builds on the excellence of both programs to improve quality and safety, plus increase access to promising investigational cancer therapies through clinical research studies.
“We are very pleased with the long relationship that Maria Parham has had with Duke,” said Bob Singletary, President and CEO of MPMC. “One of the biggest advantages of the Maria Parham/Duke partnership is the ability to provide world class technology and care to the patients in our own community.”
Linda M. Sutton, M.D., medical director of the Duke Oncology Network, said the collaboration with Maria Parham Medical Center is a part of Duke’s mission to contribute to the quality care being delivered in communities throughout North Carolina.
“Our relationships are built upon enduring collaborations that are dedicated to excellence in cancer care,” Sutton said, adding that Maria Parham Medical Center has long demonstrated a commitment to high standards.
The Duke Oncology Network is a program of the Duke Cancer Institute, which serves thousands of new cancer patients each year across the state, nation and world. The DCI is one of 40 centers in the United States designated as a comprehensive cancer center.
The Oncology Center at Maria Parham offers a full range of services that blend state-of-the-art technology for diagnosis and treatment with compassionate and knowledgeable care. Medical and radiation oncology are both offered, along with related services such as counseling and nutrition. Education is available through an on-site Cancer Resource Center, a joint effort of The American Cancer Society and the medical center.
In coming months, Maria Parham expects to strengthen its relationship with Duke when it becomes the first hospital to join the Duke LifePoint Healthcare network of hospitals in North Carolina and the surrounding areas. Under the agreement, which is subject to approval by the Attorney General of the State of North Carolina, Maria Parham will become a joint venture partner with Duke LifePoint in the ownership of the hospital. Duke LifePoint Healthcare brings together LifePoint's experience in community-based hospital management and Duke's world-renowned leadership in clinical service to strengthen and improve healthcare delivery by providing community hospitals the clinical, quality and operational resources they need to grow and prosper.
